Next Monday 25th May, The John Hewitt Society launches Poetry Clips: An Archive of John Hewitt Society Contributors. This unique collection will feature a range of short videos showcasing readings from world-renowned poets including Billy Collins and Sinéad Morrissey along with emerging poets such as Stephen Sexton, Susan Dickie and others. New videos recorded by the poets will be released for viewing on The John Hewitt Society website and social media platforms on a weekly basis.

The John Hewitt Society promotes literature, arts and culture inspired by the ideas and ideals of Belfast-born John Hewitt, a renowned poet, art historian and collector and political activist. Like so many other arts and cultural events impacted by Covid19, the Society has been compelled to cancel their flagship event the annual John Hewitt International Summer School & Literary Arts Festival which was set to take place at the Market Place Theatre & Arts Centre Armagh in July.

The aim of the Summer School is to explore political and cultural issues through literature and arts, and to encourage participants to think critically about the world around them through a series of lectures, discussions, debates and workshops. One of the fundamental elements of the Summer School is the opportunity for participants to engage and mix with high profile artists and writers so its cancellation this year was unavoidable in light of public health advice. The Society have subsequently sought some new and innovative ways to remain in touch with their loyal audiences and supporters, attract and engage with new audiences and provide a platform for a wide variety of literary artists to present their work.

Commenting on the launch, Chairman of the John Hewitt Society Tony Kennedy said, “We are delighted to have garnered support for this initiative from so many eminent poets and also those emerging on the cultural and literary scene. Whilst it is disappointing that this year’s Summer School had to be cancelled, we still hope to offer some online events and workshops in late July. This online initiative will allow us to replicate some of its core elements and also provide an important platform for poets and artists to disseminate and discuss their works. In the longer term, these readings and cultural outputs will also form a significant body of work, and will be compiled into an online archive”.
